The Ports

As one of the busiest ports in the U.S.* and the largest port on the East Coast, the Port of New York and New Jersey is a passageway to one of the largest and most important consumer markets in the world.

The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 9,493,664 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in 2022 making it the busiest year in its history. 2022’s total was 5.7% above the 2021’s and 25% above the five-year annual average.  The Port’s volume in 2022 places it well above the East Coast’s other main ports of Virginia (3,703,230 TEUs) and South Carolina (2,792,313 TEUs).

  • The Port’s volume through Q1 2023 was 12% slower compared to the same period last year.
  • 2023 started well with a 3.5% increase in January compared to January last year, but has since slowed with decreases of 16% and 20% in February and March, respectively.
  • The Port’s decline in Q1 2023 has been most pronounced in empty export TEUs (-33%) and in loaded import TEUs (-27%).
